This poster was done quickly, as I was under the impression that I'd be doing a shit ton of posters in the near future. Originally slated to be the poster for Billy Talent based upon the song River Below (they play the Basement the night before AFI does the Newport), I opted to switch it up because I remembered that most of my friends who enjoy AFI always tended to refer to their album The Art of Drowning. And that was that.
Stylistically, I tried to keep it simple at first. This isn't quite a vignette, but it was drawn as such, with the bubbles and debris added later to insinuate water. That led to more texture, which in turn bred problems for color. And what do I do when I have problems with color? I try everything until something works.
This just happened to feel alright by me. I know AFI are not really all about hot pink, but I'm not a big fan of them and when I'm assigned a poster for a band I'm not an enormous fan of, I tend to take more liberty when it comes to remaining true to their aesthetic. Which is probably why I opted out of Billy Talent for the design; I love Billy Talent and I couldn't see this fitting them.
Regardless of all that, I'm trying to hone my line and texturing skills in Illustrator. I hope it shows. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . It doesn't really make me think of AFI specifically, but I absolutely love the style of this one - the strong definition of colours and lines and funky shapes are just awesome!
cool choice of colors, and the background work, so gentel against all the other stuff thats going on there - it's brilliant
